Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 200g spaghetti pasta (or preferred type), cooked al dente
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Parmesan cheese, grated (optional)
  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, then add the spaghetti and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, reserving a little pasta water for the sauce.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: While the pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and minced garlic, sautéing until translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Build the Sauce: Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, sprinkle Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, then stir well. Let the sauce simmer gently for 8-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
  4. Combine Pasta and Sauce: Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet with the sauce. Toss thoroughly, adding a splash of reserved pasta water if needed to loosen the sauce and help it cling to the noodles.
  5. Finish and Serve: Remove from heat and sprinkle generously with grated Parmesan cheese and freshly chopped basil or parsley. Serve immediately while warm and comforting.

Notes

  • Cook pasta just until firm to the bite (al dente) to avoid mushiness when mixed with the sauce.
  • Reserve a few tablespoons of pasta water to adjust sauce consistency and enhance texture.
  • Use freshly minced garlic for the best flavor rather than pre-minced or powdered.
  • Let the sauce simmer gently to deepen flavors without burning.
  • Choose good quality canned tomatoes for a richer sauce flavor.
