Cake Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk

Buttercream Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Gel food colors (various colors)

Decoration Tools

  • Flower piping tips (petal tips, round tips, leaf tips)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your cake pans. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and baking powder. In a separate large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract. Alternately add the flour mixture and whole milk, beginning and ending with the flour, mixing gently until smooth.
  2. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely before decorating to ensure the frosting stays smooth.
  3. Make the Buttercream Frosting: Cream softened butter with powdered sugar, adding a splash of milk and vanilla extract until creamy and smooth. Divide the frosting into small bowls and tint each with gel food colors to create a variety of flower colors.
  4. Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a thin layer of frosting on top. Stack the second layer and apply a crumb coat covering the entire cake. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. Then apply a smooth top layer of frosting as a base for your flower decorations.
  5. Pipe the Flowers: Using different piping tips and colored frostings, pipe a variety of flowers such as roses, daisies, and tulips on the cake surface. Take your time placing each bloom, layering petals and adding leaves to create a garden-like appearance.

Notes

  • Chill your frosting for easier piping and cleaner flower shapes.
  • Practice piping designs on parchment paper before decorating the cake.
  • Use gel food colors for vibrant hues without thinning the frosting.
  • Level cake layers with a serrated knife for a polished look.
  • Keep piping tools clean by wiping them between colors.
