Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 3 cups firm, tart apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and finely diced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for richness)

Dough

  • 1 package (about 14 oz) pie crust or dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • Water or beaten egg, for sealing edges

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil or canola oil, for frying (enough for deep frying, about 2-3 inches deep)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: Peel, core, and finely dice your apples. In a saucepan, combine the apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the mixture thickens slightly, about 8-10 minutes. Stir in butter if using. Set aside to cool.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out your pie crust or dough to about 1/8 inch thickness. Using a round cutter or glass, cut circles approximately 4 to 5 inches in diameter.
  3. Fill and Seal: Place a spoonful of the cooled apple filling in the center of each dough circle. Brush the edges with water or beaten egg to help seal. Fold the dough in half, creating a half-moon shape. Press edges firmly to seal and use a fork to crimp and decorate.
  4. Fry the Pies: Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Fry the pies a few at a time, avoiding overcrowding, until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  5. Cool and Serve: Let the fried apple pies cool slightly so the filling thickens and to avoid burning your mouth. Serve warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar or paired with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Choose firm, tart apples like Granny Smith for best texture and balanced flavor.
  • Do not overfill pies to prevent bursting during frying.
  • Seal edges well with water or egg wash to keep pies intact.
  • Maintain oil temperature steadily at 350°F (175°C) for even frying and crispy crust.
  • Drain fried pies on paper towels to remove excess oil and keep them light.
