Crockpot Chicken and Gravy

This Crockpot Chicken and Gravy recipe is an effortless, comforting meal featuring tender bone-in chicken thighs slow-cooked in a rich, savory gravy. Perfect for busy days, it combines simple pantry ingredients with slow cooking to create a satisfying, family-friendly dinner that’s great served over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Base Ingredients

  • 46 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 packet onion soup mix (about 1 ounce)
  • 3 garlic cloves, freshly minced

Thickening and Creaminess

  • 2 tablespoons flour or cornstarch (for gravy thickening)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk

Seasonings and Garnish

  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Pat the chicken thighs dry to help the skin brown slightly if you choose to sear them, mince the garlic, and gather all seasonings for quick assembly.
  2. Place Chicken in the Crockpot: Arrange the chicken thighs skin-side up at the bottom of the crockpot, avoiding overcrowding to ensure even cooking.
  3. Add the Flavor Base: Evenly sprinkle the onion soup mix and minced garlic over the chicken. Pour in the chicken broth to cover the meat and infuse flavor.
  4. Cook Low and Slow: Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours until the chicken is tender and easily pulls apart.
  5. Thicken the Gravy: Remove the chicken from the crockpot. Make a slurry by mixing the flour or cornstarch with water or broth, then stir it into the cooking liquid. Add the heavy cream or milk and cook on high for 15-20 minutes until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  6. Combine and Serve: Return the chicken to the crockpot to coat it with the thickened gravy. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use bone-in chicken thighs for juicier meat and richer gravy.
  • Browning the chicken before slow cooking adds extra flavor and texture but is optional.
  • Adjust the amount of chicken broth depending on crockpot size and preferred gravy thickness.
  • Mix the flour or cornstarch slurry thoroughly to avoid lumps in the gravy.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper before serving, as slow cooking may mellow the flavors.
  • Let the dish rest for a few minutes after cooking to allow flavors to meld.
