Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 cup tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 (20 oz) bag frozen French fries (crinkle or shoestring)
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Optional Garnishes

  • Chopped pickles
  • Sliced green onions
  • Extra mustard or ketchup for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Brown the Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Cook until the beef is no longer pink and the onions are softened, breaking the meat apart with a spatula as it cooks.
  2. Mix in Sauces: Drain any excess fat from the skillet. Stir in the tomato sauce (or ketchup) and mustard. Let the mixture simmer for 2–3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Layer the Casserole: Grease a baking dish. Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly over the bottom. Top with a layer of frozen French fries (no need to thaw). Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded sharp cheddar cheese over the fries.
  4. Bake Until Golden: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the casserole for 25–30 minutes until the fries turn crispy and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Serve Hot: Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes. Slice and serve with optional garnishes like chopped pickles or sliced green onions for the full cheeseburger flavor experience.

Notes

  • Use frozen fries straight from the bag—no need to thaw.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan while browning beef to ensure even cooking.
  • Sharp or aged cheddar cheese works best for richer flavor.
  • Let the casserole rest after baking to prevent runny slices.
  • Adjust seasonings to taste during cooking for deeper flavor.
