Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 to 5 crisp apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 sheet store-bought puff pastry (approx. 12 x 15 inches)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Optional Add-ins

  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: Peel, core, and thinly slice 4 to 5 apples. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced apples, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until apples soften but maintain their shape. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly before assembling.
  2. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, unfold the puff pastry sheet and gently roll it out into a rectangle about 12 by 15 inches, ensuring it is even and thin enough to fold around the filling.
  3. Assemble the Strudel: Spoon the cooled apple mixture down the center of the pastry, leaving a 2-inch border on all sides. Optionally, sprinkle raisins or chopped nuts on top of the filling. Fold the long sides over the filling, then fold the short ends under to seal the strudel tightly.
  4. Apply Egg Wash and Bake: Transfer the strudel to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Lightly beat the egg and brush it over the entire pastry surface. Use a sharp knife to make several small slits on top to release steam. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25 to 30 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  5. Cool and Serve: Allow the strudel to cool for about 10 minutes after baking to let the filling set. Slice and serve warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar or paired with whipped cream, vanilla glaze, or ice cream.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Pink Lady to keep the filling from becoming mushy.
  • Do not overfill the pastry to avoid leaks during baking.
  • Keep the puff pastry chilled before rolling out to ensure maximum flakiness.
  • Use egg wash generously for a shiny, golden crust.
  • Let the strudel rest before slicing for cleaner cuts and better texture retention.
